What kind of Glass can be etched?

The glass used in showers is normally 1/2 inch in thickness and tempered. Tempered glass if broken will shatter into small pieces for safety. Because of this the deepest tempered glass can be etched is 1/8 inch. Designs are mostly shaded with limited deep carves.

Laminated glass is used when the glass is to be sealed around all edges like a window or door frame. Laminated glass is two pieces of glass with a film between that if broken, the glass will stick to film. Depending on thickness, this glass can be carved more deeply.

Typically the glass doors you get from big box stores will be tempered or laminated and are 1/8″ thick. For safety reasons, this glass can only be shaded, not carved.

How should the Glass be cleaned?

It is important to use only glass cleaner that has no ammonia added.

Spray onto a soft cloth first and not directly on the glass. If any marks get on the glass, use a small amount of denatured alcohol to clean it off.

Maui has very hard water so the water can spot. We suggest to have the glass custom sealed locally on Maui by Scott Wetsel at South Pacific Glass. Always wipe off with squeegee after showering to help prevent spots.
